10 Great Pantry Design Ideas for Your Kitchen

The kitchen is often referred to as the heart of the home, and with good reason. We spend a lot of time in our kitchens cooking, prepping and entertaining. During our kitchen renovation planning, we really wanted to improve the function of our kitchen for our family. We added things like a large built-in table to our island and deeper cabinets to flank our fridge. Another essential part of our kitchen planning was our pantry design. Whether you have a large walk-in pantry or a small pantry space, good pantry design plays an important part in your kitchen’s efficacy and organization.

Our kitchen layout has a corner pantry. It came that way, we haven’t touched it in the 11 years we’ve lived here. It’s not an enormous pantry space, but it’s a decent size. The interior dimensions are about 48″ x 48″. The original pantry design had four basic white wire shelves that were installed by the builder. They have served their purpose but it was time for them to be replaced. We were tired of having things fall through the cracks and scraping knuckles on the wire shelves.

As we progress through our kitchen install, we have had a few delays.  It’s to be expected of course and we are thankful that so far it’s nothing major.  The main issue to date was that our cabinet supplier miss-ordered our fridge gable panels.  This has caused a bit of a delay on the cabinet installation on that wall.  We are pushing ahead on our own part of the project, however, and have started tackling our pantry.

Layout

Work with what you have.  Most of us don’t have massive pantries so making the most of your existing space is important.  Can you go up?  Can you go out?  Add innovative ideas to your layout to maximize your space.  Having a countertop or work space built-in to your pantry is a smart pantry design element.

Lighting

Don’t forget to think about lighting options for your pantry. Not only will this help you find what you are looking for, but it can be a pretty and personalized detail in your pantry space.

Pantry Door

We may not all have room for a spectacular barn door solution, but think about what your pantry door could be.  I found a glass company who can replace the existing glass in our pantry door for something more functional and aesthetically pleasing.  We are going to add laminated glass which give the look of frosted glass but can double as a white board.
