A new year brings with it new design trends. What better way to kick off your New Year than to set some design goals for yourself. We have some very ambitious goals of our own this year with some serious renovations planned for our home. We got off to a great start over the holidays with a refresh to our main bathroom. While we put the finishing touches on that and prepare for a reveal, here are 10 of my favourite interior design trends that I hope to work into my own space.
1. Using millwork to create feature walls and detailing.

Whether shiplap, panelling or reclaimed wood, this is one of the design trends that is predicted to stick around for a while. There are extensive online tips and tricks available making this is a project that your average DIYer can tackle. This trend can add a subtle detail or make a bold statement and is great for any room especially bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms.
2. Patterned flooring.

This year move away from traditional straight-lay flooring design. Make a statement with your floors by installing it in a pattern. Put it on a diagonal, 70/30 split or even a brick-lay pattern will add a new dimension to your space. Herringbone is a personal favourite and is a great way to incorporate the design trend but keep it timeless.
3. Mix and match your kitchen finishes.

The days of monochromatic kitchens are behind us. This year is all about mixing and matching color rather than keeping it all the same. While some bold designers are bring blues and greens into the kitchen, you don’t have to go that far to make a statement. Painting your base cabinets or island in a darker tone while upper and/or wall cabinets stay light are still on trend.
4. Vintage lighting.

Recently there has been a huge focus on lighting in general as fixtures become a part of a room’s artistic statement There has been a significant interest in vintage style fixtures, such as aged copper pendants, to add to touch of warmth and charm to a space.
5. Matte black finishes.

I am personally thankful to move away from last year’s satin brass in exchange for matte black. Watch for this design trend in kitchen as well as bathroom fixtures. Although selections can seem a bit limited in this finish, suppliers like Moen who are shown here are working to expand their product offerings to include more options in the durable finish.
6. Casual, calm and contemporary bedrooms.

To create a restful and calming bedroom space, pare down the ornate details and busy patterns. Opt instead for soothing neutrals, soft fabrics and simple pieces that are a bit more minimalist by design. By simplifying your bedroom decor, you will create a soothing and restful homeowner retreat.
7. Mixing metallics.

Although mixing metals has become popular over the last year or so, the focus now is on the texture and sheen of the metals as well as the colour. Designers are mixing things like shiny brass with matte black steel or brushed nickel and copper elements. Metallics are a great way to brighten a room, add texture and interest whether as an accent wall, fixtures or fireplace surrounds.
8. Dining tables.

Incorporating your dining space into your kitchen isn’t necessarily something new. How you work it in though is changing a little. In many smaller kitchens, homeowners are considering a traditional dining table in place of an island. Others are including a more functional island that can double as work space as necessary. This dining table features a quartz countertop that adds to your available prep area.
9. Goodbye white or stainless steel sinks.

As one of the past design trends that was not a personal favourite, I am happy to say goodbye to white sinks in the kitchen. Our stainless steel sink has also seen better days. I eagerly look forward to replacing it’s easily scratched surface. Designers and homeowners alike are looking towards concrete, stone and granite composite sinks in darker shades of grey, bronze or black.
10. Fish-scaled pattern backsplash.

Most of us have grown a bit board of subway tiles but still want to stick to something that is simple and classic. Enter the fish-scaled pattern. This look offers movement and visual interest but is still versatile enough to work with almost any kitchen style.
