Modern farmhouse decor has become a powerhouse of a design trend over the last couple of years. Its charming mix of contemporary finishes and rustic warmth really seems to have struck a cord in many of us. I am drawn over and over again to the mix of natural materials like barn board with crisp whites, warm greys and other modern elements.
Authentic rustic treasures like barn board can be hard to come by though, especially for us city kids. Although barn board is something that is widely loved, it is in relatively limited supply. This can make it difficult to find and therefore surprisingly valuable.
Among our many great ideas in our renovation plan, is to change up our living room fireplace wall. We wanted something with a bit more charm than our current half wall of stacked stone can offer. I found a lovely inspiration picture of a living room with white built-ins and a wood feature wall which we really love. Although this look was created from up-cycling some pallets, we are hoping to use some authentic barn board to add a similar look.
We spent some time this past long weekend camping, getting out of the city. We happened to have gone camping near my husband ‘s family farm a couple hours north east of where we live. No one lives on the farm anymore, but some of the old buildings remain in tack and were the perfect source for scavenging wood for our barn board project.
Now that we are home again and have a healthy pile of barn board stacked neatly in the garage, the challenge will be how to best put it to good use. In addition to a possible feature wall, I started looking for other creative ways that we can breathe new life into the old wood. There are a lot of great ideas out there! Here are 10 of the most creative and unique ways to use barn board (or the look of barn board) in and around your home.
