Easy DIY Project for Kids

It’s nearing the end of summer vacation and the kiddos are restless.  The recent refresh of our basement bathroom and the need to focus their attention for at least an afternoon on something other than bickering, gave birth to an idea for an easy diy project that was perfect.

My kids are collectors, that’s how we kindly refer to their hording tendencies anyways.  Rocks, seashells, sticks, commemorative pins…it doesn’t matter.  If it can be picked up and grouped together, they will try to smuggle it home.  Especially when we are on any kind of vacation or camping weekend.  When we ask them about it, it’s all “special”, they couldn’t possible part with one single bit of their collection.  I’m sure you can imagine how many treasures we stumble across with three kids in the mix.

Unfortunately this passion for endless accumulation works in direct contrast with my love for purging!  As a result, we have developed this carefully choreographed secret weeding of the treasures when no one is looking.  Many of the natural finds do get relegated to our backyard and find a home amongst the rocks etc there.  Inevitably each of our kids still have boxes and bins of things squirreled away in their closets.

In a recent round of clean up and clean out, we came across a couple of beautiful sand dollars…origins unknown.  As much as I lean heavily towards a polished, transitional design style most of the time, I do love a touch of rustic and the occasional beachy vibe for a bit of texture.  The blank walls of our basement bathroom offered the prefect place for our easy diy creation.

Off we went to grab a few supplies, the most important of which was a cute picture frame.  In the span of an afternoon, with the help of a couple recent beach vacation photos and some accessories, we upgraded our bathroom and added a nice homey touch.

We removed the glass from the frame and traced the back onto some white card stock to create place to mount our shell.

My special little helper helped me to cut it out.

We secured it in place with a bit of hot glue.

Voila!  As simple as that!
