Look out parents, here comes Halloween! Another kid centered, overly commercialized, consumer based holiday is nearly upon us. But who doesn’t love it, all the candy and treats? Everything else seems to take a backseat this week to the frantic prep work for this holiday, especially if you have kids. Last minute costume prep, school party snacks and trick-or-treat planning. It’s not like I didn’t see it all coming, but somehow it has sneaked up on me again!
Now as much as I try, and obviously pretend not to try, to be super Mom…I am no hero. I am not the home-made costume making, delightfully creative snack creating, adorable decoration hanging type. My kids will run through the neighbourhood in their store bought costumes, pillow cases in hand and still have a great time collecting an absurd amount of candy.
Just one variable left to contend with…the weather. My fingers are crossed and I’m holding my breath. The kids have been watching the forecast all week. We just have to hang in there a couple more days! I remember vividly as a kid trudging through snow banks and trick-or-treating in snowsuits. Cramming all those extra layers of clothes under your costume was not much fun.
Around here I admit, making it to Halloween with no snow on the ground is a gift. I think part of what overshadows Halloween for me though, is the knowledge that winter is right around the corner. Saying goodbye to fall always seems to come too soon. After the initial Halloween sugar rush wears off and reality sets in, you realize that winter is here to stay. November seems sort of gloomy and grey as we are forced to acclimatize to the season.
But I will worry about that later! For now we have our pumpkins carved and our costumes ready, but today I have to tackle the school party snacks. In between hockey games over the weekend I took to Pinterest and found these delightful little morsels. This adorable ghostly pretzel treat from Dessertnowdinnerlater.com looked like the perfect mix between cute and easy.
To coat these little pretzel cuties, I used white chocolate chips. The candy eyes I picked up from Michaels for about $6…I have some left over for another tasty treat in the future. Maybe a reindeer treat for Christmas? I will make a mental note to come back around to that.
I did use a touch of coconut oil to thin the chocolate as suggested. It helped with the consistency of the chocolate mixture. I also found melting the chocolate in a glass bowl over a steamy pot of water (double boiler style without the double boiler) helped keep the chocolate mixture at a good temperature so I didn’t have to keep reheating it.
Final verdict…my kids thought these were awesome! They thought they were as tasty as they were fun to eat. In fact I had to hide the bowl so they wouldn’t eat them all. It was a good thing these were so easy to make that I had made a double batch! These ghostly pretzels are also a potentially allergy friendly school snack for those who need a peanut free treat option.
What you will need:
- approx 50 prezels
- 1 bag of white chocolate chips (about 225g or 1 1/4 cup)
- 1/2 tsp coconut oil
- 1 pkg Candy Eyeballs (I used Wilton)
What you need to do:
- Prep a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Lay out pretzels and candy eyeballs so dipping and eye placement can happen quickly.
- Bring pot of water to a low boil and leave to simmer on stove.
- Melt white chocolate and coconut oil in a glass in the microwave for 10-20 seconds at a time until melted. It’s important not to overheat.
- Place bowl of chocolate over steam to keep warm.
- Immediately dip pretzels one at a time into the chocolate, coating both sides. Using a fork, shake off excess chocolate so that the bottom hole of the pretzel is left open to look like a mouth. Place dipped pretzel onto baking sheet.
- Press two candy eyeballs into the freshly dipped pretzel’s top two holes. You may need to add a drip or two of extra chocolate to make sure they stick.
- Repeat until all the chocolate mixture is used up.
- Allow the pretzels to harden. Placing them in the freezer for 10 minutes helps to speed up the hardening process.
- Peel the pretzels off the baking sheet. Voila, a tasty Halloween treat!
I was really impressed with how amazingly easy these adorable treats were to make. They look great and travel well too! A definite must-do for next year.
